Background and Problem

Historical events and tragedies such as The Nuremberg Trials, The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and the Thalidomide tragedy have played a significant role in shaping modern medical and biomedical research ethics.  These events highlighted the importance of informed consent and the need for ethical review of research protocols.

Ethics remains a critical component of clinical research, with human subjects training often being a job requirement for clinical research personnel.  Despite this requirement, challenges related to informed consent and subject enrollment continue to arise.

Solution

During my prior position as a regulatory compliance specialist (or auditor,) I conducted root cause analyses and often determined that training was a suitable solution due to gaps in knowledge and skills related to the study protocol.  As a solution, I designed a scenario-based eLearning experience for research coordinators using problems they may face in the real world.

For this project, I acted as the subject matter expert and used anecdotal observations, along with ethical principles, guidances, and regulations that are used in the clinical research industry to design this course.

I used the ADDIE model and action mapping to create this scenario-based eLearning course.  In the below action map, the main goal of the course is on the far left, branching off into three high level actions that further branch off into activities.  I selected an activity for each high-level action and used those to create the questions for the course.

I created a combined text-based storyboard and mock-up using Microsoft PowerPoint.  After receiving and implementing feedback from an IDOL courses academy coach on the mock-up I developed the course in Articulate Storyline 360.  I received and implemented feedback on the developed course, which led to the final course, which can be found at the below link.

The course was designed as a mini scenario that gives the option to retry until the learner gets the correct choice.  Each incorrect answer describes a real consequence based on what I've seen or experienced firsthand, allowing the learner to further understand the ramifications of enrolling the wrong patients into a study.

The questions were designed to enable learners to use and strengthen their critical thinking skills, namely observation, interpretation, decision making, and problem solving.  Job aids are included for learners to access if they need help.

Results

Through the development process, I was able to explore and identify my preferred approach to the different steps of designing a course.  For example, I found it better to create the slides in PowerPoint and import them into Articulate Storyline as opposed to creating them in Articulate Storyline.  I also learned to consider slide design and navigation earlier in the process for a more streamlined approach.  An example of this is deciding when to use multiple layers for slides as opposed to creating separate slides.

After the project was complete, I learned of the ability to create links in PowerPoint.  Having working navigation in my mockup would have been useful in making it easier to write my storyboard and in giving a more realistic feel to the mockup.  The linking capability in PowerPoint is something that I plan to use in future projects.

When I was brainstorming topics for this course, I knew I wanted it to be on a topic that was meaningful and impactful and also something to represent a bridge between my former career and my new journey.  I also knew that I wanted it to solve a high-stakes real world problem. Overall, I believe the High Rollers course meets those objectives and I am pleased with the outcome.
